Are You Ready for CVSA’s Annual 72-hour Roadcheck Inspection?

Tom Cuthbertson
VP of Regulatory Compliance

It’s almost that time of year again! The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is conducting its annual 72-hour Roadcheck Inspection. This year, the international mandatory blitz will take place June 7th -9th.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA), of the over one million Level 1 inspections conducted in 2014, over 268K had at least one out-of-service (OOS) violation. Level 1 inspections (also known as the North American Standard Inspection) are the most detailed of the six inspection levels. Not only does it include examining all aspects of the vehicle, but it also includes inspecting the driver’s medical examiner’s certificate, Skill Performance Evaluation (SPE) certificate, and inspecting for alcohol and drugs.  To ensure the driver and the vehicle passes inspection, the CVSA has offered these tips:

  1. Buckle Up
  2. Pre-inspect the condition of your vehicle
  3. Get in a safe mindset
  4. Maintain a safe following distance
  5. Make only safe and necessary lane changes
  6. Focus on your driving and avoid or minimize in-truck distractions
  7. Never drive under the influence
  8. Get enough sleep

Omnitracs’ Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) application can also help ensure the truck is being properly maintained. It eliminates the need for paper reports and makes it easier for drivers to record pertinent inspection information. With regular prompts and alerts from VIR, drivers stay compliant with all required inspection reports for both their tractors and trailers.
