Critical Conversations May Hold the Key to Improving Driver Performance

Professional truck drivers deal with risk virtually every minute of every day—whether environmental or behavioral. Inclement weather, poor road conditions and bad decisions made by other drivers can make for a less-than-ideal workplace. Couple these hazards with truck drivers who are fatigued, distracted, lost, swerving, speeding or hard-braking, and it’s a recipe for on road calamity.

At Omnitracs Outlook 2016, I had the pleasure of co-presenting—along with Trimac’s Vice President of Safety and Fleet, Marcel Pouliot—at a session on “Tools to Reduce Risk and Improve Driver Performance.” In a nutshell, we pointed out that behavior you can’t see leads to risk you can’t manage. Fortunately, Omnitracs offers a variety of applications and integrations designed to improve visibility to risky driving and, thus, help fleet managers proactively intervene to avert disaster.

With our Critical Event Reporting (CER) application, fleets have a comprehensive, actionable view of safety-oriented, event-driven data, summarized by vehicle and driver to pinpoint issues and enable targeted intervention. CER offers near real-time alerts of unsafe driving maneuvers—such as lane departures, rapid deceleration or hard cornering—while a vehicle is still on the road. This allows fleet managers to better understand driver behavior, identify those who are not adhering to safety guidelines, and leverage data to inform driver training and coaching sessions.

Integration to best-in-class third-party active safety systems enables Omnitracs CER to capture incident details five minutes before and two minutes after an event is automatically or manually triggered. So, if your roll stability system activates, CER kicks in to capture details such as vehicle and driver ID, time and location of event, event description, along with frequency. Real-time alerts are sent to designated users, based on predefined criteria, so your driver managers know what happened and can take action immediately.

In the optimal scenario, a fully-integrated, comprehensive fleet safety solution delivers not only notification and measurement, but also enables intervention and, ultimately, prevention. The most advanced fleets take full advantage of technologies such as Omnitracs CER, Navigation, Analytics and more, with integration to onboard systems from Bendix, Drivewyze, Meritor-Wabco, Pro-Tread, SpeedGauge and other leading providers. By doing so, these companies can significantly reduce risk, prevent collisions or other incidents, and improve fleet productivity and efficiency; all while keeping drivers safe on the road, every day.
