Operation Safe Driver Week: This year, speeding is in the spotlight

Omnitracs

It’s that time of year again. July 14 marks the start of Operation Safe Driver Week, organized by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA). Every year, CVSA works with law enforcement throughout the United States to reduce unsafe driving behaviors such as distracted driving and failure to wear seat belts.

In 2017, 9,717 people were recorded as killed on the road in accidents involving speeding. With this in mind, the CVSA is focused this year on raising awareness and reducing speeding on our roads and highways. Starting July 14 and ending July 20, law enforcement will be on the lookout for unsafe driving behaviors, focusing on speeding.

Here are a few more stats from CVSA regarding speeding:

  • During last year’s Operation Safe Driver Week, law enforcement issued 16,909 passenger vehicle drivers and 1,908 commercial motor vehicle drivers citations for speeding. Also, 17 commercial motor vehicle drivers and 714 passenger vehicle drivers were cited for driving too fast for the conditions. See more results from last year’s Operation Safe Driver Week here.
  • Speeding has been a factor in more than a quarter of crash deaths since 2008, this according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute.
  • According to FMCSA’s 2016 Large Truck and Bus Facts, speeding of any kind was the most frequent driver-related crash factor for drivers of commercial motor vehicles and passenger vehicles.

Many of our blog posts include tips or strategies to help drivers and fleets best handle an issue. When it comes to speeding, there’s only one effective tip we can give — don’t. As the CVSA points out, Late won't kill you, speeding will.” And in the end, business operations aren’t as important as your life, the lives of your drivers, or the lives of other drivers on the roads.
