Getting in the Holiday Spirit: Giving Back by Remembering, Honoring, and Teaching

This Saturday dozens of employees from Omnitracs’ offices in Dallas, Baltimore, San Diego, and Minneapolis are taking a reprieve from holiday shopping to head to local cemeteries — including the mother of all cemeteries in Arlington, VA — to once again participate in National Wreaths Across America Day. It’s our eighth year to do so, and it’s becoming a family affair, with friends, parents, siblings and offspring gathering together to lay wreaths on the graves of our nation’s greatest heroes.

Nearly 100 of our customers are participating, too. Fleets have freed up trucks, and drivers have volunteered their time during this busy holiday season to transport thousands of wreaths to 1,200 cemeteries across the nation. It takes 52 trucks to deliver 246,000 wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery alone.

But these are not the only reasons why it feels so personal.

Wreaths Across America’s mission is to remember fallen U.S. veterans, honor those who serve, and teach children the value of freedom — tenets Omnitracs shares since veterans serve roles in nearly every level of our organization. In fact, trucking and transportation is one of the most common professions for those returning to civilian work. One million military veterans are currently employed within the industry.

Veterans and transportation organizations have always gravitated towards one another, sharing a mutual respect for hard work, commitment to safety, and discipline. Our customer fleets have frequently reported that their veteran drivers have the most exceptional safety records and longest tenures within the organization.

Omnitracs’ support of Wreaths Across America is an opportunity to thank veterans for the freedoms we have and the roads we travel. As our growing base of employee participants gather each December to recite fallen soldiers’ names while laying wreaths on their gravestones, we strive to honor the true meaning of the holiday season.

National Wreaths Across America Day is more than just a fun holiday activity for our staff. It’s a way to instill and maintain a culture of honor and respect for not just our veterans but also the heritage of so many in our driving community.
